A wonderful trek through the Himalayas combines the delightful hill station of Dharamsala and adjacent McLeod Gang – home to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan community. Our carefully planned itinerary provides magnificent views of the Dhauladhar range and the beautiful Kangra valley besides our experience at Pragpur, a Heritage Village.
In the north of the Punjab plains and rising to around 5,000 metres, the southernmost ridges of the Indian Himalaya are known as Dhauladhar. Here, amongst these ‘White Mountains’, the British established several hill stations, including Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj, which is today home to Tibet’s popular leader, the Dalai Lama. After a day’s exploration of this colourful Buddhist place of pilgrimage we trek through pretty villages and high pastures on the south side of the ranges, following trails used for centuries by the local shepherds and their flocks. Gaining height gradually and walking for an average of just 4 hours each day, we enjoy a series of scenic camping places with plentiful opportunities to meet friendly villagers. From our highest camp at Triund (2,850m) there are particularly fine views of the peaks and ridges of Dhauladhar. There is also time to see local craftsmen at work, visit the tea capital of the region and stay in a delightful old manor house in the World Heritage Village of Pragpur.
